Only 600,000 game day seats remain for the entire season. The World Champions will play to a sold out crowd for all 81 home games this year, and for those who can't buy a seat...take your place in the waiting list line! With limited availability, ticket prices have gone up as the demand far exceeds the supply. Expect Comcast's Giant TV ratings to go through the roof, with thousands of fans unable to enter AT&T to see their hero's play. Still, a clever marketing campaign will feed the frenzy using combinations of Giant players "acting" on TV commercials. The 30 second spots take a soft sell, and fun loving approach to selling the few remaining tickets.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://localball.blogspot.com/2011/03/price-of-success-giants-tickets-cost.html' title='The price of success. Davis' firing of Lane Kiffin was speculated for quite a while, but it's Al's unwillingness to bring in people who arn't "yes men" that's destroying the franchise. Some longtime loyalists like George Atkinson stick up for the old man, (as beginning of video shows) but for the majority of Raider Nation knows Mr. Davis is living in the past. Some of the old glory was rekindled on Sunday, and Oakland scored an overtime 16-13 win over the New York Jets and Brett Favre. The game was sloppily played. The Raiders were penalized 14 times, but quarterback Jemarcus Russell did not throw and interception and outplayed the legend Favre. The Jets made their own share of mistakes which nullified Oakland's numerous offside and proceedure errors. The Raiders appeared to win the game at the end of regulation when a 52 yard field goal by the Jets hit the upright as time expired. Unfortunately, new head coach Tom Cable called a timeout before the kick and Feeley got another shot and converted. The two teams battled in overtime, until Sebastian Janikowski nailed a 57 yarder to win it for the Raiders.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://localball.blogspot.com/2008/10/oakland-raiders-beat-brett-favre-and-ny.html' title='The Oakland Raiders beat Brett Favre and N.Y. Prior to the Raiders' overtime win over Brett Farve's New York Jet's on Sunday, Raider Nation partiers were in "high spirits" despite the firing of their coach and a 31 point defeat the previous week. Prakash Amritraj had numerous break situations but Andreas always found a way to avoid it.

Kim, Ball, Jenkins and Stoppini advance to quarter finals at Comerica Seascape Challenger in Aptos

The 108th California Open Tennis Championships...USTA's Pro circuit stop in Aptos has reached the quarterfinals, with 10 year veteran Kevin Kim the top remaining seed at #3. Seascape hosts Pro Tennis circuit tour stop

Tennis anyone? Following the epic Nedal-Federer final at Wimbledon, the sport recieved a boost. The USTA hopes to ride the wave with it's Challenger series at the Seascape Sports Club in Aptos. Many international future stars may be in the field, but nobody within the World's top 100 rankings are entered. Still, it's an extremely high level of tennis being played this week at our area's top tennis facility. While the women don't do battle until tommorrow, the men have been duking it out all week in singles and doubles. Amer Delic, the top seeded American at #143 in the World rankings was bounced in his match against India's Prakash Amritaj, but for the complete updated bracketing and results visit: www.USTA.com. A former top-10 player, bay area native Brad Gilbert is on hand as coach for several players in the tournament including his son Zachary who was a singles loser, but still alive in doubles action. Yesterday's play was highlighted by #4 seed Scoville Jenkins and Ti Chen's battle on Center Court, won by the hard hitting Jenkins in 3 sets. Today's winners will move to the round of 16, with the finals slated for Sunday. In the 21 years of the Challenger at Seascape, the #1 seed has never won in the finals, which illustrates how wide open and closely ranked these players are who have world rankings between 150 and 500. The player who has been the most dominant thusfar has been Alex Bogdanovic of Great Britian. The southpaw blitzed his opponent from Israel yesterday 1 and love. He's been coached by Gilbert the past 6 months and has seen his world rankiing improve to #237 and could very well be the man to beat this week at Seascape.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://localball.blogspot.com/2008/07/challenger-series-comes-to-aptos.html' title='Challenger series comes to Aptos. The speedy athlete with the tools will go to Cal Poly SLO instead of taking small money and turning pro. Selected about 1000 players behind IKE, the scouts felt he needed some seasoning. He'll get that at Mike Krukow's alma mater. Eichhorn may be temped to become a Diamonback, but look for him to honor his agreement to play at Santa Clara. While Crocker has a man's body but is unpolished, Kevin is smooth and talented as any pitcher in the draft, but lacks "physicality". He will grow into a first round pick by playing for the Broncos. Having a hand in selecting Crocker by the Athletics were a pair of Aptos grads. Current Mariner hitting coach Matt King and Athletics Scouting director Eric Kubota both know Bobby is a diamond in the rough so choosing the Mariner was a no-brainer even though they knew college was on his agenda.

Kevin Eichhorn drafted in 3rd round by Arizona Diamondbacks

Despite the knowledge that Kevin Eichhorn has declared to play college ball at Santa Clara, the Arizona Diamondbacks snatched the right handed pitcher from Aptos High as the 104th pick of the amateur draft at the end of round 3. Little IKE, son of former Major Leaguer Mark Eichhorn was rated #113 by Baseball America so his status improved on draft day. Kevin was Santa Cruz county's top high school baseball player for the last two seasons and has been clocked by scouts at 94MPH. Still with a teenager's physique, the great unknown is how he will mature. Mark was a 6'5" rightly who changed his delivery to sidearm after shoulder problems. His son Kevin has a classic easy motion with high release and leg kick. An electric arm with a fundamentally sound delivery. No word yet on the signing bonus offered to Eichhorn by the Diamondbacks, but chances are it won't be enough to sway his decision away from playing for the Broncos of Santa Clara and going to college. Look for Eichhorn to be drafted higher next year and deal with the decision to take the money and play in the minors then.

Baseball Amateur draft today. Where will Eichhorn go?

The 2 time Santa Cruz county high school player of the year is Kevin Eichhorn of Aptos. The Mariner right hander struck out half the batters he faced this year with a fastball clocked at 94mph by scouts with speed guns. His ERA was about 1.0, but his Mariner teammates again failed to win the CCS losing in the semi's. Little IKE would have pitched in the finals against Wilcox had Aptos been able to beat Los Altos. Baseball America ranks Eichhorn as the 113th best player and in the top 30 for high schoolers. Kevin has signed a letter of intent to play College ball for the Broncos of Santa Clara, and knowing that, pro teams will probably not spend a high pick for the soft spoken phenom. His father Mark is a 10 year former major league pitcher with 2 World Series rings. Baseball America says "son of a big leaguer without his dad's physicality. Both lose 3-2.

The Cardinals of Santa Cruz were on a roll. They were the #1 seed in division III, and were expected to beat Live Oak in the Championship game yesterday at San Jose Municipal Stadium. It didn't happen, just like Aptos two days earlier when upset by Los Altos in the semi's. Both local schools lost by 3-2 scores, made some mistakes, ran into a hot pitcher and could not generate clutch hits. 3 errors doomed Santa Cruz despite the outstanding pitching of Alex Taku. The Cardinal ace was cruising, but the when he reached 10 innings for the week, coach Bob Kittle had to lift him from the mound and John Mathews came in and surrendered 3 runs in one third of an inning. Just like Aptos, Santa Cruz came back with 2 runs late, but could not generate anything more against winning pitcher Matt Cummins who lifted the Acorns to their first CCS Championship in Live Oak history. So the Cardinals who finished the season 26-8, ended the SCCAL season a game behind Aptos for the league title, and had their offense sputter yesterday will always have the no-hit victory over the Mariners at the Oakland Coliseum as the hightlight of an outstanding season that ended in defeat. The highlights from that combined no-hitter are streamed on this site, as are most of the Aptos Mariners games in a season that had both schools seeded number one for the CCS playoffs, and neither able to complete the journey.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://localball.blogspot.com/2008/05/santa-cruz-endures-same-fate-as-aptos.html' title='Santa Cruz endures same fate as Aptos in CCS. Yesterday at San Jose Muni, it was a 3-2 loss that ended the Mariner's season in the semi's. Both playoff games featured Erik Johnson as hero for 22-10 Los Altos, and nemesis for 26-5 Aptos, the division's top seed. The Eagle starter went the distance, striking out 9, and owned Aptos' leadoff hitter Bobby Crocker who fanned 4 times. The wind was a huge factor, as several routine fly balls became an adventure for the Aptos defense. The Mariners hit the ball harder than Los Altos, but not in the air to left where the wind was blowing. Johnson was staked to a 2-0 first inning lead and got an insurance run as he took the mound for the bottom of the 7th. That 3-zip cushion was cut to one, as Tyler Raymond smashed a two run shot that did not need the stiff breeze to clear the wall. The Mariners had the tying run on and winning run at the plate, but it was not to be. The streaming video above captures the game's highlights. The offense woke up and Kevin Eichhorn did the rest. Little Ike's 1 hit shut out was ended after 5 innings with the mercy rule taking effect. Aptos, now 26-4 scored 3 in the first and never looked back. They hit in the clutch, ran the bases well, and played solid defense. Nobody hit one out of historic Washington Park in Santa Clara, which happens to be the home field of the Bruins. Santa Clara High's season ends at 19-13. All of Aptos' starters had at least one hit, as the team waited well on the diet of off-speed pitches delivered by diminutive Bruin right hander Brian Martin. Eichhorn was not in top form, dealing with a strained rib cage muscle from goofing around playing whiffle ball earlier in the week. He walked two in the first inning, gave up a ground ball single to George Netto and that was it. Bobby Crocker single sharply to right on the first pitch he saw to lead the Mariner attack. This game, the team looked like they were having fun putting the petal to metal. There would be no letdown or mistakes on Saturday, except perhaps 3rd base coach Matt King who waived Beau Fraser home when he was thrown out be 10 feet. With the 2nd round playoff win, Aptos now collides with Los Altos on Thursday at San Jose Muni. The Eagles beat the Mariners for the title last season.

Magowan calls it quits. Giant void.

PETER A. MAGOWAN ANNOUNCES HIS RETIREMENT

Giants Managing General Partner Peter A. Magowan announced today his plan to retire on October 1, the scheduled end of the 2008 season. He will be succeeded as managing general partner by William H. Neukom, currently a general partner in the ownership group. Giants Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Laurence M. Baer will become President, effective October 1. Magowan will remain a partner in the Giants ownership group.

This transition is subject to the approval of Major League Baseball, which is expected to take place at the next scheduled ownership meeting (August 13 and 14 in Washington, D.C.).

“It has been an honor to represent the Giants the last 16 years,” said Magowan. “I will remain a partner and, of course, I will always be a Giants fan – as I have been since I was eight years old. I have always felt that no individual or group of individuals is really the owner of a sports franchise, because a team really belongs to the community. I feel very fortunate that my successors – with whom I have worked for more than a decade –

feel the same way.

“The decision to retire was not an easy one. But it is the right one for my family and me. I have spent the last 29 years as head of two incredible organizations – Safeway and the Giants. I put everything I had in terms of time, energy and commitment into my work and inevitably I made some sacrifices. Now, I’d like to spend more time with my family. Four years ago I had one grandchild, and now I have 10. This just seems like the right time for me to move on.

“I would like to thank my family, my fellow partners, the Giants front office and guest services staff, all those who have worn the Giants uniform these last 16 years, the Giants alumni, and, above all, our fans for their loyalty, support and friendship over these many years. You have given me many wonderful memories, which I will cherish forever.

“As the Giants begin their next 50 years I believe they are in good hands. I know the management team will not rest in its quest to bring our community the World Series championship that it deserves.”

Baer began his current tenure with the Giants in 1993, working with Magowan and the new ownership group. Prior to that he served as a media executive at Group W and CBS in New York City. He is a fourth generation San Franciscan with degrees from the University of California at Berkeley and Harvard Business School.

“I will be forever grateful for the partnership Peter and I have shared these past 16 years,” said Baer. “I look forward to working with Bill and the entire organization to continue the rich tradition of Giants baseball and to make San Francisco one of the best baseball towns in the country.”

Neukom has been a member of the Giants ownership group since 1995 and a general partner since 2003. He is currently a partner in the Seattle office of the international law firm Kirkpatrick & Lockhart Preston Gates Ellis and is also the President of the American Bar Association. Previously, Neukom served as the Executive Vice President of Law and Corporate Affairs for Microsoft. A graduate of Dartmouth College and Stanford Law School, he chaired the Dartmouth Board of Trustees from 2004 – 2007.

Neukom was raised in San Mateo, California and lived next door to Charlie Graham, Jr., the general manager of the San Francisco Seals. In 1958, he was a shareholder of the National Exhibition Company, the owners of the Giants who moved the team to San Francisco.

“Like Peter, I have been a Giants fan almost my entire life,” said Neukom. “Since 1995, I have had the opportunity to personally witness the remarkable contributions of Peter Magowan to San Francisco and to Giants fans everywhere. San Francisco has experienced a baseball renaissance that started when he and the ownership group saved the team for San Francisco. Under his leadership, the Giants created the first privately-financed Major League ballpark, became one of only four teams in history to draw more than three million fans for eight consecutive seasons, and consistently fielded exciting teams that led to four post-season berths, including the seven-game World Series of 2002.

“While no one will be able to match what Peter has accomplished these past 16 years, I am excited about the opportunity before me, and I look forward to continuing the great work of this organization.”

# # #

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://localball.blogspot.com/2008/05/magowan-calls-it-quits-giant-void.html' title='Magowan calls it quits. Aside from Bobby Crocker's solo shot, the Aptos offense continues to slumber. With the win, the Mariners now collide with Santa Clara high at Washington park in Santa Clara on Saturday at 4. Aptos and Santa Cruz top seeds.

There was some anticipation that the nationally ranked Aptos Mariners would move up to Division 1 and play the bigger schools in post season play, but instead will remain in division 2 despite having beaten the D-1 top seed San Benito in the regular season. Aptos, at 24-4 and 11-1 in SCCAL plays host to Branham High, a sub .500 team in the opening round game on Thursday. Meanwhile, Santa Cruz (23-7, 10-2) owns the top seed in Divsion 3 and entertains 14-9 Harker High on Wednesday. The Cardinals defeated the Mariners 8-4 in no-hit fashion at the Oakland Coliseum a few weeks ago, so remaining in the small school catagory is a bit of a disappointment as well. Both teams deserve a shot at the Central Coast Section's power schools, but neither will compete against them or eachother. Without a State Championship game scheduled for the ultimate test, winning the CCS against less than the best will be a bit of a letdown. Still, both local schools still have some quality teams in their way. #2 seed in D-2 is Wilcox. The #2 seed in D-3 is Menlo. On the bright side, Aptos and Santa Cruz both have very legitimate chances to capture CCS Championships albeit against schools of similar size. Both squads however would prefer to play against the Big Boys.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://localball.blogspot.com/2008/05/ccs-baseball-playoffs-set-aptos-and.html' title='CCS baseball playoffs set. They shut out San Lorenzo Valley 6-zip but it wasn't easy. The Cougars' sophomore lefty Zach Settles had the leagues top team tied in knots for 6 innings with his offspeed stuff. Kevin Eichhorn was masterful with a 13 strikeout one hit performance. He also chipped in with a 3 run homer in the last inning. Bobby Crocker seems to be coming alive, but the rest of hitters have fallen on hard times of late. Andrew Biancardi, Beau Fraser and Kyle Anderson the meat of the lineup is going hungry. At least Aptos was trying to be aggressive when runners were on base against SLV. Home plate umpire Tom Smith (who will be pitching on Sunday at Aptos in the over 27 Men's Basebal league for the Blue Jays) called three runners out at the plate. The 5 run final inning rally came off a reliever, not Settles. With the 6-0 win, Aptos remains a game ahead of Santa Cruz with a 9-1 SCCAL record. Today's victory was head coach Randy Kramer's 50th in under two season as the Mariners skipper. Aptos is 22-4 this season.

Aptos has hangover after No-hit by Santa Cruz. Nobody was pleased in victory. Hangover from the Santa Cruz game at Oakland? Sure. But the Aptos Mariners are not playing hard at the moment. Still numb from being no-hit by Taku and Myers of the Cardinals, the former #1 ranked high school baseball team in the State beat St. Francis 6-2 at home. Aptos played without passion. They are not hitting or executing the other aspects of the game. The talent is there. The Mariners have played together a long time. Kevin Eichhorn, Andrew Biancardi, Kyle Anderson, Tyler Raymond, Curtis Worden, and Bryan Godoy as magical 12 year olds are now seniors with a strong supporting cast. A season is full of peaks and valleys, their recent play against the Sharks, Cardinals and Falcons is a mirage, or shows the vulnerability of the collective talent. The remaining league games should go true to form with the standings ending Aptos a game ahead of Santa Cruz as they enter CCS playoffs to will determine their fate. Our understanding is that Aptos will move up and take on the bigger schools, while Santa Cruz should be a top seed in Division II. The Mariners meet SLV on Friday in Cougarland.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://localball.blogspot.com/2008/04/aptos-has-hangover-after-no-hit-by.html' title='Aptos has hangover after No-hit by Santa Cruz. The Santa Cruz Cardinals brought their league arch-rival down to earth in no-hit fashion. Alex Taku and Max Myers combined to leave Aptos hitless and numb that such a thing could happen. Consider the "upset" was executed at the Oakland Coliseum in Dave Stewart's High School Baseball Showdown, the loss becomes magnified. Add to the story that the league's top pitcher in Kevin Eichhorn, with a 93MPH fastball was roughed up in front of a large crowd at the stadium, scouts and other top teams in California watching, the defeat stings all the more. Aptos still holds the SCCAL lead with a 7-1 mark compared to Santa Cruz with 2 losses, but that's small consulation for a team that was favored to go unbeaten in league. Aptos' four runs despite being hitless were a result of a bases loaded walk and a 3 run error. The Cardinals had 8 runs, double digit hits, some outstanding defensive plays and were by far the better team Saturday afternoon in Oakland. For the complete story of the game, visit http://www.santacruzsentinel.com/ and read Jim Seimas' account. The Aptos Mariners batted around twice in the first inning with center fielder Bobby Crocker going deep twice to right. Kevin Eichhorn homered to start the game for Aptos, and the onslaught ended after 13 runs had scored. Little IKE started, allowed one hit and struck out 10 in his five innings of work. Every Mariner got at least one AB and time in the field. Several balks were called in the first inning as Padre pitchers were completely rattled by the Nationally ranked Aptos squad. As usual, a host of pro scouts were on hand to clock Eichhorn's fastball in the low 90's, be impressed with Crockers 3 round trippers and ground rule double in his 4 at bats. Carmel must be commended for making the trip, for a game that was an "add-on" and originally scheduled at home. The Padres battled, but couldn't score against Eichhorn, Brian Godoy and Kyle Anderson. Next up for Aptos is Scotts Valley next Friday, and then the big game at the Oakland Coliseum Saturday against league rival Santa Cruz. The Cardinal had only one loss in SCCAL play until Friday, when upset by Soquel. That takes a bit of the luster of the importance of the Aptos-Santa Cruz game in Oakland but still provides a huge stage for the two local teams.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://localball.blogspot.com/2008/04/aptos-crushes-carmel-crocker-goes-deep.html' title='Aptos crushes Carmel. Everything from an autographed jersey from the 2002 Aptos Little League World Series team to dozens of items ranging from a custom bird bath to Spa memberships received bids from those in attendance to support the program. Dozens of items, many donated by community businesses created a buzz that turned into bucks to back Aptos baseball. Many believe that this season's Varsity team which is Nationally ranked can become the best high school team in California. At 17-3 and 5-0 in SCCAL play, the squad which features 5 of those Little League World Series veterans has not played their best baseball as yet. The squad, coached by former Pittsburgh Pirate pitcher Randy Kramer will be disappointed with anything less than a perfect league record and a Central Coast Section championship. Although a small school compared with powerhouses Valley Christian, Serra, Mitty and other Bay Area programs..the Mariners will abandon their small school division in favor of competing against the Big Boys come playoff time. With perhaps the best 1-2 starting pitching aces in California featuring Kevin Eichhorn who throws in the low 90's despite his slight physique, and lefty Kyle Anderson who displays poise and precision beyond his years...this formidable duo who have been on the big stage as 12 year olds, now seek the promised land as high school seniors. Both have committed to D-1 college programs, but all bets are off if big dollars are offered to turn pro. Major League scouts have attended every Aptos game this season, primarily eyeballing the amazing arm of Eichhorn, but other talented players like speedy center fielder Bobby Crocker, solid third baseman Andrew Biancardi, and catcher Beau Fraser are being scouted. All intend to play at the college level, but anything can happen when Big League teams come calling. Kevin's dad Mark was drafted as a shortstop but was converted to a pitcher and owns World Series rings with Toronto and Baltimore. Though Kevin swings the bat well, he's averaging 2 strikeouts and inning with a microscopic ERA, and will only improve as he matures and his body developes. The Mariners next game is at home Tuesday against Harbor, but the game circled on everybody's calender is April 26, when Aptos collides with rival Santa Cruz at the Oakland Colosium. Continue to check "local ball" on this website for highlights and reports on just about all of Aptos' games in their quest to reach the pinnacle of High School Baseball

Aptos High stays unbeaten in league with win at Scotts Valley

I missed the game, so no streaming video report. Tuesday, Aptos hosts the Harbor Priates.

Cabrillo scores important baseball win over Ohlone. Ace pitcher Kevin Eichhorn took the mound and dominated Calvert Hall of Maryland with 12 strikeouts en route to a 10-1 pasting. Powered by a Grand Slam by 3rd baseman Andrew Biancardi, 2 dingers from Kyle Anderson and a solo shot from Eichhorn, Aptos took control early and Eichhorn did the rest on the hill. Eichhorn, son of major league pitcher Mark has struck out 52 batters in 28 innings this season with a microscopic ERA of .30. Today, Aptos collides with the state champions from Tennessee. Anderson, who should get the start today, has 3 homers in the past two games, and it should be 4 in the past 3, except he missed touching home plate against Santa Cruz last week after hitting one out to left.

Aptos High gets bubble burst in National Elite Tournament

Can you say wake up call? Riding high from an 8-4 win over Santa Cruz, the Aptos Mariners ranked #11 in the nation by a high school baseball rating service, was smoked by an unranked team from Florida at a National invitational tournament in Southern California yesterday. The bats went cold, defense made some errors, and pitcher Brian Godoy had issues. Plus, Aptos was shut down by Florida's #2 pitcher. Kevin Eichhorn and Kyle Anderson, the Mariners 1-2 pitching stars will throw the next couple games. "We got our butts kicked" laments Aptos coach Randy Kramer. Today, Calvert Hall of Maryland is the opponent for the Mariners who happen to be ranked #1 in the Nation. However, they also lost their opening game in the prestigious 16 team tournament, ending their 39 game winning streak. Such a get together took place over Easter weekend at the minor league field of the Bakersfield Blaze. 9 games took place over the 3 days, most of them won by the Giants, but it's more about comraderie and the joy of playing hardball. What he doesn't have is a team, a coach that will give him opportunites, and the experience to work himself back on the Warrior squad. Golden State coach Don Nelson is notorious for not showing faith in rookies, especially those who didn't complete college. O'Bryant bailed from Bradley after his sophomore year. Brian Godoy started and got the win, Kevin Eichhorn returned from a 2 game injury, and the offense erupted . Thursday at Dodge Field, the Santa Cruz Cardinals host Aptos featuring two of the best teams in the CCS. Expect Ace Alex Taku to do battle with Kevin Eichhorn in a matchup of the leagues top two pitchers in the marquee game. The two rival teams are by far and away the class of league. Both squads feature outstanding 3rd basemen in Peter Miller of Santa Cruz and Andrew Biancardi for the Mariners. Aptos features 6 players from the Little League World Series team who are now seniors and poised for the challenge ahead. Santa Cruz at 10-2 has also played some bigger schools in the pre-league season like St. Francis, Valley Christian and Mitty, so the Cardinals will not be intimidated especially at home, and Coach Bob Kittle always has his team ready to play. It should be a great game Thursday at 4pm. 12sportsonline.com will be there, and you should too.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://localball.blogspot.com/2008/03/aptos-clobbers-slv-in-league-opener.html' title='Aptos clobbers SLV in League opener. The San Benito team is 4-0 in league play and now 6-3 overall. Aptos moves to 9-1 with the SCCAL season beginning Tuesday at home vs. SLV. Aptos High, ranked 23rd in the nation has not been playing up to that level. A missed sign, getting caught with the hidden ball trick at second, and failure to slide at 3rd were the lowlights from the highly regarded Mariners. These mental errors will serve as learning experiences, but it made for an ugly win yesterday. Star pitcher and shortstop Kevin Eichhorn did not play, having been nailed with a pitch on his right ankle against Salinas, but X-rays were negative and he should be back in the lineup soon.

Aptos survives Salinas 7-6 in OT. Eichhorn hurt, Biancardi goes yard and McCreesh comes up big

Kevin Eichhorn and the Aptos Mariners were up 1-0 when he came to bat in the bottom of the third. The ace pitcher's day came to an end as a low fastball nailed his right ankle area. He tried to pitch in the 4th, but could not push off the rubber. With Eichhorn out, Salinas rallied for 5 runs, capped by a 3 run homer from Nick White to lead 5-1. In the 5th, Aptos put up a 5 spot of their own, batting around, highlighted by Andrew Biancardi's 3 run bomb. The Cowboys then tied it in the 7th, but in came closer Luke McCreesh who shut the door thanks to a botched suicide squeeze and a stikeout. He shut down Salinas 1-2-3 in the 8th. In the bottom of the extra frame, Nick Ingram who started the Mariner rally in the 5th hit a bloop single to right that was misplayed into a triple. Up stepped Bobby Crocker, and with his single to right the game was over and Aptos improved to 8-1 with the 7-6 extra inning win. Both Aptos and Salinas have two players who are sons of major leaguers. Kevin and younger brother Bryan are Mark Eichhorn's sons, and Blake and Mike Jr., are Mike Aldrete's boys. The video below captures some of today's highlights. Now at 7-1 and ranked in the Nation's top 25 High School squads, the small school in Santa Cruz County needs to find some offense to compete with the bigger schools for the ultimate prize. With at least 5 players destined for Division 1 colleges, (unless drafted with signing bonus' too good to pass up) the Mariners team appears to be able to pitch with any squad, but needs to find it's groove at the plate. Aptos' pitching with Kevin Eichhorn, Kyle Anderson and Bobby Crocker can compete with anyone with former big leaguers Randy Kramer and Mark Eichhorn as coaches, but early this season only 6 of the 9 starters seem to offensively ready. Santa Cruz High appears to be the only real challenge in the SCCAL for the Mariners who stand at 7-2 in non-league action.

Aptos dominates rescheduled dual with St. Francis of Mtn. For some reason, the umpires never got the memo and the game was cancelled. (See previous local ball blog) Saving the marquee matchup, the high school powers mobilized to move the game to Mt. View on Wednesday. The home field advantage for St. Francis was mute, as Kevin Eichhorn, son of former major league pitcher Mark struck out 16 in his 6 innings of work, en route to a 3-0 shutout to improve the Mariners record to 7-0. Andrew Biancardi provided all the needed offense with a 2 run bomb, and Bobby Crocker, perhaps the best prospect on the top-25 Nationally ranked Aptos Mariners struck out the side for the save in the 7th. Tomorrow, the Mariners visit another perenial powerhouse in Valley Christian. Kyle Anderson, one of 5 players (now seniors) for the magical Aptos Little League team that made it to Williamsport for the World Series earlier this decade will start for Aptos on the hill.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://localball.blogspot.com/2008/03/aptos-dominates-rescheduled-dual-with.html' title='Aptos dominates rescheduled dual with St. Francis of Mtn. Two powerhouse teams were set to collide with at least a dozen major league scouts in the stands to watch prospects from both teams. The Aptos Mariners never took the field after the National Anthem, and St. Francis of Mountain View made the trip for nothing. Apprearantly, nobody notified the umpires. The game certainly was on the schedule. Several major league scouts out of Sacramento made the trip, yet the biggest local high school baseball game of the season was a mystery for the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League. Coaches, players, scouts and fans were all left in bewilderment that something as routine as getting umpires to show up could not be accomplished. Prior to gametime, cell phones were fired up trying to reach the SCCAL cheif umpire Bill Bunner or anyone else who could connect with the men in blue. Nobody's efforts were successful, and a half hour after the scheduled start, the game was cancelled. There's a chance the matchup will take place Wednesday evening in Mountain View. That's where the make up energy is no targeted. Armed with my DV camera, I tracked down Pittsburgh Pirate scout Sean Campbell.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://localball.blogspot.com/2008/03/huge-gamemajor-league-scoutsand-no.html' title='Huge game..major league scouts...and no umpires at Aptos High. Pete began his caddy career at Pebble Beach in the 60's. Members convinced him to find a bag on the PGA tour and he did in 1966, at "The Crosby". In 1980 he worked for the Golden Bear. In 1996 his boss was the Great White Shark. Greg Norman led all 4 Majors in the final round that season and broke through winning the British Open with Pete Bender carrying the clubs. That victory was Bender's 2nd major having done the same for Ian Baker Finch in 1991. Bender's pros have won 26 tournaments with him on the bag. Stage 4 from Seaside to San Luis Obispo was ridden in challenging wet and cold weather for the 135 mile journey. Today's race was won by Canadian Dominique Rollin over hilly technical terrain down the California coast. The miserable conditions forced about a dozen cyclists to abandon the California Tour but fans showed up along the route and at the finish line to salute the riders. With an mindset of saving something for Friday's all out 15 mile time trial sprint in Solvang, Leipheimer hopes he can hold off David Millar and Fabian Cancellera who are within striking distance and are superior in short time trail stages. Levi leads by 13 seconds as their were no changes in the overall standings following the superb effort by Dominique Rollin who beat the field and survived the elements in the spectacular stage from Seaside to SLO.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://localball.blogspot.com/2008/02/75-hours-in-saddle-vs-headwind-and-rain.html' title='7.5 hours in saddle vs. headwind and rain for Amgen cyclists. The top 2 American seeds Andy Roddick and James Blake play evening matches on Thursday. The San Jose event runs through the weekend. The Modesto-San Jose stage of the Amgen California Bike Tour featured a two man break of Robert Gensink and Santa Rosa's Levi Leipeimer. They broke from the Peleton and helped eachother to the line. Levi let Gensink win the stage but gained enough time on the field to own a :13 second cushion and the yellow jersey. The difference was the non-ranked catagory climb up to Mt. Hamilton which is over 4100'. Today, the Tour starts at Seaside at 10. The course is spectacular, as it follows the coast south on highway 1 to San Luis Obispo. Along the way, the riders fly by Big Sur, and Hearst Castle on their 125 mile journey, the longest stage of the Amgen California Tour. Back to Tennis, the SAP Open at HP Pavilion actually started in 1889 at Old Del Monte in Monterey, and pre-dates the US Open.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://localball.blogspot.com/2008/02/sap-open-at-hp-tennis-anyone-levi-in.html' title='SAP Open at HP. Players and former players are seeking redemption by coming correct and copping to having been enhanced. The two greatest players of our generation, Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens continue to fight the truth in their own separate ways. Bonds keeps his arrogant mouth shut on the issue. The Rocket can't keep his pie hole shut, proclaiming he never indulged. Please! They both make the Hall of Fame because commissioner Selig, owners, managers, agents, and all important people on the pro baseball landscape are culpable. As for Glen Hill, the Ex-Giant, Cub, Yankee and current first base coach for Colorado from Santa Cruz has elected to come forward and admit his use of steroids while a player. Glen had the symptoms of acne, enlarged skull and other tendencies associated with taking human growth supplements. The Mitchell report and congressional hearings will prompt others to come forward, and at some point there will be hundreds of current and former major leaguers admitting their guilt. It's time for those who pay their salaries, negotiate their contracts, and coach them to share the truth and humiliation. The players union, commissioner and even companies who sponsor these players have known about the artificial aids being used for years, and have turned a blind eye. It makes for interesting ESPN and news highlights, but it's no mystery. Major League baseball, in the name of stimulating the game has allowed the cheating to occur. Humungeous contracts will always prompt players to get that extra edge. Aside from golf, no sport demands honesty as a matter of play. but even the PGA tour will be blood testing. Pro boxing, especially in California has always mandated the most ridged testing policies to get licensed. All other major sports are insulated from such disclosures. The sooner more pros come out of the closet and admit their transgressions, the better all pro sports will be. Commissioner Bud Selig had this all happen during his watch. It's time for him to be accountable. Baseball and all sports need a cleansing, but it can not happen until those in charge of the game come correct.

The Warriors. 12 games over .500. Beat Phoenix Wednesday.

There is not a more exciting team in the NBA than Don Nelson's Golden State Warriors this season. The up and down high scoring style that at times plays matador defense is a treat for basketball fans. High flying 6'1" guard Monta Ellis has been unstoppable, averaging 30 points the past 6 games, rebounding like a monster and making good decisions. His high flying mid air adjustments are eye popping, and consider the kid came to the NBA out of high school and is only his third season with the Warriors. The marvel from Mississippi grows with every game he plays. Last night, he was on the floor for all 48 minutes, and Golden State needed him every second. Meanwhile, newly acquired Chris Webber starts at center, plays a few minutes and stays on the bench for the rest of the game. He has been no help to Golden State in the two weeks he's been with the club. Perhaps the faith Nelson and GM Chris Mullin has shown will pay off toward playoff time, but so far the C-Web has been a dud. Baron Davis being snubbed as an all-star will at least get him a few days off. He's played every game this season. At 32-20 Golden State would be in the 3 position if they played in the east. Out west, the Warriors are battling with Houston tied for the 8th and final playoff spot. Only 5 games separates the top 8 teams in the Western Conference, but expect the Lakers to rise to the top seed with the steal deal that brought them 7 footer Pau Gasol. Shaq has yet to play for Phoenix, but the jury is still out as to Diesel's ability to get up and down the court and not slow the Suns down. So far, that's exactly what's happened with Webber which accounts for his 6 minute a game average.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://localball.blogspot.com/2008/02/warriors-12-games-over-500-beat-phoenix.html' title='The Warriors. 12 games over .500. Monterey Herald sports purged

First it was clear channel radio eliminating anything of local origination on the airwaves. 16 of the 21 radio stations in the Monterey Bay area market are owned by the same corporate entity. Only one station in our area, KSCO remains locally owned and operated, but the station includes no sports in it's programming. Everything is now formula radio. The spoken word is obsolete unless the format allows it. Local news and sports is a thing of the past on our area's radio stations. On the print side, Media newscorp now controls the Santa Cruz Sentinel, San Jose Mercury, and Monterey Herald. Sports personnel have been fired at all three papers at an alarming rate of late. Earlier this week, 3 positions in Sports were eliminated at the Herald. The paper's best sports writer, Dennis Taylor was spared but he's now assigned to News. With the increasingly limited number of sports writers in the market, one might think that stories that are regional in nature would be shared with Media Newscorp partnering papers. That has not been the case. Meanwhile on the TV front, KION and KCBA include no sports reporting on their newscasts, and only KSBW with Dennis Lehnen (a 30+ year veteran like me in this market) provides any sports presentation within the News. It is a sad commentary that media has become so homogenous with deregulation by the FCC to allow giants like Clear Channel and Media Newscorp to control multiple stations in the same market. As a result, the heart and soul of our area is lost in the boardroom and Sports programming is taking the biggest hit. Certainly, daily newspapers are finding revenue sources scarce and have no choice but to reduce pages and slash positions, but there is still a spot for electronic media to represent, even though advertising dollars continue to be eroded by the internet.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://localball.blogspot.com/2008/01/media-newscorp-slashes-again-monterey.html' title='Media Newscorp slashes again.
